C R K Stable LLC
Owned by Lee and Susan Searing, CRK Stable gets its name from the first initials of their three children, Christina, Richard and Katherine. Lee first attended the races at age 8 with his father, who owned several horses that raced in Mexico. He and his father owned several horses in partnership from 1968 until his father's death in 2002. Outside of racing, Lee Searing and his brother, Jim, operate Searing Industries, a company specializing in the manufacture of welded steel tubing used in such things as racking systems, dinette furniture, medical equipment and scaffolding.
Although Candy Boy's physique and running style give cause for optimism, his pedigree is not ideal for 1 1/4 miles.
His sire, the undefeated Candy Ride, was a champion miler in his native Argentina. He later carried his brilliance over 1 1/4 miles in the 2003 Pacific Classic, setting a Del Mar track record of 1:59.11 in his only attempt at the distance.
As a highly-successful sire, however, Candy Ride has primarily been transmitting his speed. He is responsible for reigning champion two-year-old male and fellow Derby hopeful Shared Belief; 2010 Santa Anita Derby winner Sidney's Candy, whose stamina limitations were exposed when well beaten in the Kentucky Derby; Twirling Candy, a seven-furlong record setter who also dominated major races at 1 1/8 miles, but was beaten narrowly in the 1 1/4-mile Hollywood Gold Cup and Pacific Classic; and top sprinters Capt. Candyman Can, El Brujo, Evita Argentina and Home Sweet Aspen.
Candy Ride has sired a major 1 1/4-mile winner in Misremembered, hero of the 2010 Santa Anita Handicap. But Misremembered (who may have gotten a little help from his broodmare sire Quack) remains atypical for his sire's progeny.
Candy Boy's immediate family is oriented more toward the speed than the stamina side of the spectrum. He is out of She's an Eleven, who romped in the 1 1/16-mile Melair at Hollywood but wound up fifth in the 1 1/8-mile Black-Eyed Susan in 2006.
She's an Eleven is by In Excess, who has a profile similar to Candy Ride: he was an outstanding miler/nine-furlong type who stretched his speed over 1 1/4 miles once, setting a Belmont track record of 1:58.33 in the 1991 Suburban.
In Excess has likewise been an influence for classy speed as a sire. His leading progeny include Indian Charlie, the 1998 Santa Anita Derby hero who was third in the Kentucky Derby (and subsequently a top sire himself); Musical Chimes, a classic winner in France at a mile; and 2006 Hollywood Starlet victress Romance Is Diane.
Daughters of In Excess have produced Amazombie, the champion sprinter of 2011; Canadian champion Bear Now, whose best trip was 1 1/16 miles; smart juvenile filly Hot Dixie Chick, winner of the 2009 Spinaway; and talented sprinter/miler Sugarinthemorning, who like Candy Boy, is by Candy Ride.
She's an Eleven's dam, the stakes-placed She's a Sensation, is a half-sister to two stakes-winning sprinters, notably 2005 Test heroine Leave Me Alone.
She's a Sensation does have an intriguing pedigree pattern: she is closely inbred (3x3) to Somethingfabulous, a son of Northern Dancer who is a half-brother to Secretariat.
Candy Boy's direct maternal line also has a Triple Crown connection. Tracing the sequence of dams back across the generations, one finds that he descends from the same family as 1948 Triple Crown legend Citation. Candy Boy hopes to draw upon the genetic heritage from the deeper end of the family.
