Malibu Moon-Lady Liberty, by Unbridled
Befitting a Stuart Janney III and Phipps Stable homebred, Orb has a strong pedigree for 1 1/4 miles.
His sire, Malibu Moon, is a regally-bred son of A.P. Indy whose racing career was prematurely cut short by injury. Malibu Moon has instead lived up to his pedigree by becoming a successful sire. His best son so far is Declan's Moon, the champion two-year-old male of 2004, but most of his headliners have been fillies, including Life at Ten, Devil May Care, Ask the Moon and Funny Moon -- all major winners at 1 1/4 miles -- and current sprint star Kauai Katie.
Orb is infused with an abundance of stamina from his dam, Lady Liberty, who won over as far as 1 1/2 miles on turf. She is by champion Unbridled, hero of the 1990 Kentucky Derby and Breeders' Cup Classic.
Unbridled has sired the winners of all three jewels of the Triple Crown -- 1996 Derby winner Grindstone, 2000 Preakness victor Red Bullet and 2003 Belmont Stakes conqueror Empire Maker, now a top sire in his own right. Unbridled is also responsible for noted sire Unbridled's Song; champions Banshee Breeze, Anees, Halfbridled and Smuggler; and 2000 Travers hero Unshaded.
Aside from his legacy in the male line, Unbridled is also exerting an influence through his daughters, who have produced the likes of 2011 Preakness star Shackleford and French classic winner Falco.
Lady Liberty's dam, Mesabi Maiden, garnered the 1996 Black-Eyed Susan. She comes from the immediate family of Suggestive Boy, a multiple Group 1 winner in his native Argentina who recently took the Arcadia and the Frank E. Kilroe Mile at Santa Anita.
Orb descends from the same female line as 1988 Wood Memorial winner Private Terms, ninth as the favorite in that year's Run for the Roses; 1998 Travers and Haskell victor Coronado's Quest; successful sire Icecapade; and the immortal Ruffian.
