D. Wayne Lukas
Hall of Famer D. Wayne Lukas is a four-time Kentucky Derby winner, and 43rd Derby starter in 2009. A four-time Eclipse Award winner (1985-87 and 1994), Lukas is the all-time leading money winner and the first to reach the $200 million plateau. Lukas has trained a record of 24 Thoroughbred champions and three Eclipse Awards Horse of the Year winners. He's tied with Sunny Jim Fitzsimmons for the most Triple Crown race victories, 13. Beginning in 1994 Lukas won a record six consecutive Triple Crown races.
Gary Stevens is an Eclipse Award winning jockey with wins in 8 Triple Crown races including 3 Kentucky Derbies. Gary is originally from Idaho where he grew up in a horse racing family. Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1997, Gary has won nearly every major race around the world including 8 Breeders Cup races and the Dubai World Cup. He starred in the Academy Award nominated film Seabiscuit playing the role of George Woolf in 2003. In 2005 he retired from racing and became a broadcast racing analyst for NBC.
Bluegrass Hall LLC is the racing arm of Brad Kelley’s equestrian operation. Kelley found great success in the tobacco industry before directing his focus on horse racing. He owns Hurricane Hall Farm in Kentucky which he uses as a breeding base. He has numerous horses including multiple graded winner and Kentucky Derby starter Optimizer.
Oxbow's pedigree is shot through with Breeders' Cup Classic connections on both sides, making him well suited to the 1 1/4-mile distance of the Kentucky Derby.
His sire, Awesome Again, scored four major victories at 1 1/4 miles, highlighted by Canada's prestigious Queen's Plate in just his third career start and the 1998 Breeders' Cup Classic over a stellar field including Derby-winning champion Silver Charm.
Awesome Again has become an outstanding sire. He is responsible for four Breeders' Cup winners, topped by 2004 Classic hero and Horse of the Year Ghostzapper, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame last year. Champions Ginger Punch and Round Pond, high-class older male Game on Dude, and 2012 Haskell romper Paynter are also among his leading runners. Oxbow is closely related to Paynter, for their dams are full sisters.
Oxbow is out of the unraced Tizamazing, who is also a full sister to Hall of Famer Tiznow, the only two-time winner of the Breeders' Cup Classic, and to multiple Grade 2 winner Budroyale, a close second in the 1999 Classic.
Tizamazing is by Cee's Tizzy, a well-bred horse who didn't win a stakes during his short career, but did finish third in the 1990 Super Derby. Aside from Tiznow and Budroyale, he has sired champion mare Gourmet Girl.
Tizamazing has produced three foals, all winners. Her second foal, Awesome Patriot, placed in the Hollywood Prevue at two and went on to take the 1 1/8-mile Alydar Stakes at three. Awesome Patriot is likewise by Awesome Again, so he is a full brother to Oxbow.
