D. Wayne Lukas
Hall of Famer D. Wayne Lukas is a four-time Kentucky Derby winner, and 43rd Derby starter in 2009. A four-time Eclipse Award winner (1985-87 and 1994), Lukas is the all-time leading money winner and the first to reach the $200 million plateau. Lukas has trained a record of 24 Thoroughbred champions and three Eclipse Awards Horse of the Year winners. He's tied with Sunny Jim Fitzsimmons for the most Triple Crown race victories, 13. Beginning in 1994 Lukas won a record six consecutive Triple Crown races.
Bluegrass Hall LLC is the racing arm of Brad Kelley’s equestrian operation. Kelley found great success in the tobacco industry before directing his focus on horse racing. He owns Hurricane Hall Farm in Kentucky which he uses as a breeding base. He has numerous horses including multiple graded winner and Kentucky Derby starter Optimizer.
Like her sire Broken Vow, Broken Spell has already moved on to route distances in her young career. The chestnut filly started off sprinting, tried turf and synthetic routes, then switched to the dirt over a distance of ground.
Broken Vow also quickly graduated to longer distances, taking a pair of graded contests going nine furlongs during his career and also running third in the Grade 1 Gulfstream Park Handicap at 1 ¼ miles.
His offspring have had no trouble emulating the stallion, with the likes of Grade 1 winners Sassy Image and Cotton Blossom both competing, and winning, at a mile or longer. Fellow Grade 1 queen Unbridled Belle was victorious all the way up to 10 furlongs during her time on track.
Broken Spell’s dam, the Exploit mare Rich Find, only adds to her stamina capabilities as a half-sister to the dam of Grade 2 heroine Eight Belles, who finished second in the 2008 Kentucky Derby against the boys before her tragic breakdown in the gallop out.
Broken Spell’s third dam is stakes victress Belonging, who foaled dual Grade 3-winning top sire Belong to Me, while her fourth dam is champion handicap mare Straight Deal.
Straight Deal would go on in the breeding shed to produce the Grade 1 mother-daughter duo of Desiree and Adored, as well as the dam of fellow Grade 1 scorer Qualify.
