Bill Mott has had seven starters in the Kentucky Derby with his best finish coming in 2009 with Hold Me Back. He won his first Triple Crown race with Drosselmeyer in the 2010 Belmont Stakes. Bill owned and trained his first horse named My Assets at the age of 15. He won his first race with this mare who he purchased for $320. Before he graduated high school, he had won the South Dakota Futurity with Kosmic Tour. He worked for Hall of Fame trainer Jack Van Berg for three years and gained valuable knowledge about running his own training operation, opening his own racing stable in 1978.
Joel Rosario enrolled in jockey school for six months in his native Dominican Republic and by the age of fourteen had his jockey’s license. He won his first Breeders’ Cup race in 2009 with Dancing in Silks. In 2013 he won The Kentucky Derby aboard Orb, won the Dubai World Cup aboard Animal Kingdom and set a Keeneland spring-meeting record with 38 winning rides. He made his first Kentucky Derby appearance in 2010 aboard Make Music for Me, finishing fourth.
Juddmonte Stable is owned by Prince Khalid Abdullah of Saudi Arabia. Juddmonte bred and raced the undefeated sensation Frankel who was the highest rated horse in the world in 2012. Juddmonte captured the 2003 Kentucky Oaks with Flute and the Belmont Stakes with Empire Maker. They have won 11 Eclipse Awards and won multiple champion races throughout the United States and Europe. Prince Abdullah bought his first race horse in 1977 and won his first Classic race, the 2000 Guineas, in 1980 with Known Fact. Juddmonte has 9 farms and more that 350 broodmares.
Close Hatches is the first registered foal out of the winning Storm Cat mare Rising Tornado and form the first crop to race for her sire, First Defence.
In addition to taking the Grade 1 Forego in 2008, First Defence also captured the Grade 3 Jaipur that season while placing in the Grade 1 King’s Bishop one year before.
Close Hatches joined Group 3 victor Dundonnell as the stallion’s top offspring when moving her record to a perfect three-for-three in the Grade 1 Gazelle.
Rising Tornado never did much on track while racing overseas, but is a daughter of the listed-placed Zafonic mare Silver Star.
That means Close Hatches' third dam is the Group 3-winning Sir Ivor mare Monroe, from whom is descended the likes of English, Irish and French highweight sire Xaar and Grade 1-winning stallion Senure.
Most notably, Close Hatches' fourth dam is the blue-hen mare Best in Show, who was honored as the 1982 Broodmare of the Year.
Best in Show is the dam of 1982 Kentucky Oaks queen Blush With Pride, who is the granddam of champion Rags to Riches, victress of the 2007 editions of the Belmont Stakes and Kentucky Oaks; 2006 Belmont Stakes king Jazil; and Breeders' Cup Marathon victor Man of Iron.
Best in Show is the ancestress of numerous champions and highweights, including top sires Aldebaran, Spinning World, Redoute's Choice and El Gran Senor.
