Mamma Kimbo runs away with Fantasy

Last year, Peachtree Stable and Bob Baffert saddled Plum Pretty to a gutsy neck victory in the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks, and those connections could make a repeat visit to the Churchill Downs winner's circle on May 4 after Mamma Kimbo posted a 1 1/4-length score in Wednesday's Grade 2, $300,000 Fantasy Stakes at Oaklawn Park.

Making just her second career start, the Discreet Cat filly stopped the clock in 1:43 3/5 after going 1 1/16 miles over the fast dirt at Oaklawn with Mike Smith aboard, and returned $4.80, $3.80 and $2.80 as the 7-5 favorite.

Mamma Kimbo took the lead out of the gate and proceeded to set splits of :23 2/5, :46 3/5 and 1:11 while tracked by 2-1 second choice Amie's Dini just to her outside and behind. Wait Til Dawn and Jemima's Pearl were keeping each other company a little farther back, while Illegally Blonde, Off Limits and Kitty Kat Karly trailed in behind.

Amie's Dini began her move just as Mamma Kimbo entered the turn, and Wait Til Dawn and Jemima's Pearl weren't far behind. Wait Til Dawn couldn't keep pace and began fading, though, as Mamma Kimbo kept motoring to hold Amie's Dini at bay. The Martha Washington Stakes winner never could reach Mamma Kimbo but just held a rallying Jemima's Pearl by three parts of length to take second.

It was another 1 1/4 lengths back to Wait Til Dawn, while Off Limits, Kitty Kat Karly and Illegally Blonde completed the order under the wire. Livi Makenzie was withdrawn.

Mamma Kimbo opened her racing career with a 5 1/4-length maiden victory at Santa Anita on February 18. She was making just her second start in the Fantasy, and now boasts $213,600 in earnings to go with her perfect two-for-two mark.

Bred in Kentucky by William J. Betz, Dr. Chuck Kidder and Wayne Masterman, Mamma Kimbo sold for $120,000 as a Keeneland September yearling. She is out of the Devil's Bag mare Bag Lady Jane, who was a Grade 2-placed stakes winner on track. Bag Lady Jane is herself a daughter of dual Canadian champion Deputy Jane West and counts as a half-brother Grade 2-placed stakes victor Deputy Storm. Farther back in this female line one can find How, winner of the 1951 Kentucky Oaks.
